Up to twelve inches of snow is expected in the first winter storm of 2014. Since I hadn’t been grocery shopping in a few weeks and had to go out for a business meeting anyway, I stopped at a few stores. What I witnessed was amazing. The scenes at both stores were the same… Way too many people buying what appeared to be enough groceries to last a month! The dairy and meat departments were pretty much bare bones (no pun intended). There wasn’t enough produce in the bins to make a pot of soup and where in heaven did all the lunchmeat go?
Almost on empty and I find that I’m 6th in line waiting for the gas pump. Honestly, this is ridiculous! Craziness! What are people thinking? It’s like people are preparing for an apocalypse!
Later, as I watch the still falling snow from the window in my warm kitchen, I reflect on the behavior of humans and realize that’s how many live their entire lives. This isn’t a natural disaster, just a winter storm. As a child a twelve inch snow storm was normal, and yes we may have gone out for milk, eggs and bread. But now, it’s terrible if we’re not over-stocked, over-abundant and overwhelmed. It now takes something monumental to get many people scrambling about, preparing for that day ahead when scarcity looms its ugly head. Of course, preparing for a bumpy road ahead is always the smart thing to do, but there’s times when that road rises up to meet our face, which is probably the predicament that all those last minute shoppers have found themselves in.
Gradually we have found ourselves living in a last-minute world. We’re so busy that unless there’s something pressing upon us, we delay what we’re able to put off for another day. I’m not pointing fingers as I often fall into that same category. However, I find that I want to return to a simpler life, a life that is sustainable, fulfilling and self-rewarding. That means I prepare for the future to the best of my ability, try to control the things I can and leave the rest to God.
How you live your life is a choice. Do you allow a change in plans to derail you? Do you lose control? Or do you foresee your needs and plan accordingly?
