I have a game for you to play. I’m sure many of you will freak out at this, but many of you may also be open for a little bit of a game, challenge, or simply a way to mentally disconnect for a while. This is a small, actionable challenge designed to encourage stepping outside of your comfort zone in a spiritually meaningful way. You see, “actionable” may also be an activity, which opens the door to inner reflection, which, then, opens another door to spirit communication! What I’m proposing is an unplugged challenge. One day per week, choose one mealtime each day to be completely unplugged. That means no phone, no TV, no music, and no other digital distractions. Instead, focus entirely on the present moment: Engage your senses: Notice the colors, textures, and aromas of your food. Savor each bite. Listen to your surroundings such as the ice maker, the birds, do you hear your neighbors, cars, or the waves crashing the shore? Connect with others: If you’re eating with family or friends, engage in mindful conversation. Truly listen to what they’re saying. Remember, this is sans electronics! Practice gratitude: Take a moment to silently acknowledge the food before you and all the effort that went into bringing it to your table. Practice gratitude for the abundance you’re enjoying. In a nutshell, this challenge encourages you to step outside the comfort zone of constant digital connection and cultivate deeper presence, appreciation, and connection, even in a simple daily act. By disconnecting to external noise, you’re allowing your senses to become sharper. This, in turn, will allow you to build focus on not only the world around you, but also the spiritual world around you. You’ll become more in-tune with subtle nuances as you notice the layers of what you perceive. Often times, while doing a reading, spirit may be talking about a specific subject when something completely unrelated seems to fly by my awareness. It’s in those moments that I am aware that the practice of disconnecting from an outside stimulus (such as a phone, TV, radio) so that I can connect in a meaningful manner to the world around me both physical and spiritual, has helped and honed my mediumship. As I’ve said many times, we all have mediumistic ability. You can do this too, and become more in-tune with the world of spirit around you. |
